To the extent that you have an opportunity to mentor the faith and character of a young person and prepare him for the calling God has on his life, you have made a contribution of eternal significance. Jesus calls us to lay up treasures in heaven, and whatever positive influence you can invest in the life of a young person may yield that eternal treasure.
Generally, the highest character developed in young people today is not found among those trained up in the ways of popular culture. For the last 20 years, our home education conferences have focused on the preeminence of character in the education of children. Hence, thousands of homeschooling parents have diligently worked over these many years to produce some of the hardest working, respectful, honest, and self-disciplined young people in our country today. Of course, this is not true of all homeschooled youth, but colleges, business owners, and military recruiters regularly report the robust character they see in youth who have been raised largely by parents who have invested thousands of hours building that character.
As business owners you understand the importance of solid training for your employees. Employee retention is very important and our hope is that A.M.E. will provide the kind of resources and relationships to extend the training beyond learning a trade, developing life-long relationships built upon integrity, honesty and Christian faith and practice.
Mentorship is a practice with proven success from previous generations dating back to Biblical times. A.M.E. believes it is incumbent upon a master craftsman to share his wisdom with the next generation. To relegate all education to professional teachers in a disconnected institution rather than masters in the field is what has, in some part, contributed to the sub-standard form of preparation most young people receive today.
